Makanalani
Makanalani is the Hawaiian word that means “gift from heaven.” The farm property that hosts the Kids House, holds this name, because it truly is just that. What started as a desire from the Lord has come into fruition and has impacted many lives over the years because of the Lord.
Alohalani
Alohalani is the Hawaiian word that means “heavenly love.” The internship home is named this, entirely because the desire is that all interns that come to participate in the program, feel that the Alohalani house is a home away from home that embraces/practices, love, failure, and grace.
Alaka’i
Alaka’i is the Hawaiian value of leadership, and it is a quality desired both in managing and leading. It includes coaching, guiding, and mentoring others to support their growth and self-development. Those who are Alaka’i lead with caring for others. Courage and initiative are important, yet secondary. And this is critical: To be Alaka’i is to lead and manage with good example, for your own actions will groom your empathy.
The internship will have an Alaka‘i team each session. This team is made up of interns that have gone through a previous session and are chosen to be on the team or who have specifically applied to be an Alaka‘i for their first session. These interns lead small groups, weekly devotions, and help others through the internship while leading with all aspects what it means to be an Alaka‘i.
Kuleana
Kuleana is one’s personal sense of responsibility. The person possessing Kuleana, believes in the strength of this value, and will be quick to say, “I accept my responsibilities, and I will be held accountable.” Kuleana speaks the workplace language of self-motivation, ownership, empowerment, and the personal transformation which can result. Effective delegation becomes about the sharing of Kuleana with others, recognizing where it rightfully belongs, or where it can facilitate hands on learning.
Interns will be given a Kuleana that will be theirs throughout the entire internship. These Kuleanas include:
- Social Media
- Newsletter
- Car Maintenance
- Website Design
- Office Work
- Pool Maintenance
- Landscaping
Once a week for half a day, interns will work on whichever Kuleana they are chosen to take ownership of.
Ohana
Within an ‘Ohana are those who are family, and those you choose to call your family. ‘Ohana is a human circle of complete Aloha, and in managing with Aloha, ‘Ohana is recognized as the best possible form for the association of all stakeholders in a business, for it implies unconditional partnership in full trust and Aloha.
Once a week we gather for ‘Ohana Day. This is a day focused on community and Aloha. We spend the day together as an internship going to the beach, hanging out by the pool, or adventuring around the island.
