How long is the internship?

We have 3 internship Serve Sessions throughout the year, each session is about 12 weeks long. Interns are able to apply to stay for multiple sessions.

What is the expectation of an intern?

Interns come here to serve at the farm, kids house, and local businesses, live graciously in community, grow closer to God, and have fun while doing it!

Are housing and food provided?

All of our interns live in community at Alohalani House. We provide two washers, two dryers, laundry detergent, bedding, and 3 meals a day. Snacks are not provided but we recommend bringing extra money for snacks as they come in handy during service days.

Some additional provided items

  • Laundry detergent and dryer sheets
  • Bedding
  • COFFEE
  • Daily meals, but not snacks
  • Surfboards/boogie boards
  • Guitar/Ukulele
  • Personal item/clothing storage

How do I get to Kauai?

Interns must purchase their own airfare to and from the island. The airport you will be flying into is Lihue Airport (LIH). Airfare is not covered by the internship fee.

Will I have time to explore the island?

Yes! We require a commitment of 4 1/2 days per week, to be determined by us after you arrive. These days may vary each week, but will not exceed in amount. We do however strongly encourage involvement in a local church of your choice.

How do I get around while I’m on Kauai?

Our interns will have vans to transport them to and from the farm (Makanalani) and for service work related trips. Additional vehicles will be available for small outings around the island. Interns must pay a personal mileage rate per mile travelled, more details will be provided during orientation week. There is also a bus that runs around the island.

How old do I need to be?

You will need to be at least 18 years old when your Serve Session begins. The average age of interns is around 20 years old, ranging from 18 to 23.

What should I pack?

SEE PACKING LIST HERE

Who will pick me up from the airport?

Makanalani staff will arrange pick-up and drop-off to the airport.

Can I have visitors stay with me at the Alohalani House?

You may have daytime visitors to the Alohalani house based on staff approval. No overnight visitors are allowed.

How do I pay for the internship?

$150 is due at the time of acceptance to secure your spot, should you choose to do the internship. This is a non-refundable deposit. Payments must be made through PayPal only, and sent to servemakanalani@gmail.com

Do I need to have prior farm experience?

Absolutely not! At farm Interns get to experience a ton of new types of work including but not limited to citrus harvesting, weedwhipping, tree trimming, assisting with sheep care, and mowing grass.

Interns will not be particularly required to have in-depth experience for any types of work we do at our service sites, such as JoJo’s Shave Ice or working at the Kid’s House, we only ask that Interns come open minded and ready to learn! Training for different types of work will be provided.

Will I work at each service site every week?

The Makanalani Internship provides service at 5 different service sites (JoJos, Kids House, Farm, Production/Farmer’s Market, and Naikela Tea Garden). With only 3 service days a week, Interns will not be able to put their hands on every site every week. That being said, Makanalani tries to get each intern involved with as many service sites as it can given the service site’s individual needs as it relates to the rich and full experience of the Intern.
